Is Your Business On Track? A Simple Mid-Year Financial Review

Somehow it is almost July.

The year is halfway over, and if you have not sat down to look at your numbers since tax season, you are not alone. Most small business owners are busy serving clients, managing daily operations, and growing their businesses. Financial reviews often get pushed to the bottom of the list.

But the middle of the year is one of the best times to pause. Not to panic or overhaul everything. Just to check in.

Here is a simple mid-year financial review you can complete in about 30 minutes.

Start With Your Revenue

Pull your total revenue from January through June and multiply it by two. Is that number close to your annual goal? Are you ahead or behind?

Knowing where you stand compared to where you hoped to be gives you valuable insight. If you are ahead, keep the momentum going. If you are behind, you still have time to make adjustments before the year is over.

Look at What You Are Actually Keeping

Revenue is what comes in. Profit is what remains after expenses.

These numbers can look very different, and many business owners are surprised by the gap between them.

Run a profit and loss report for the first half of the year. Review your expenses and ask yourself whether they are producing results. Are there costs that have gradually increased without you noticing?

Review Your Recurring Expenses

Subscriptions, software, memberships, and other recurring charges can quietly add up over time.

Review a recent bank or credit card statement and go through each recurring expense. You may discover tools you no longer use or services that could be consolidated.

This is not about cutting costs wherever possible. It is about making intentional decisions with your money.

Follow Up on Unpaid Invoices

If you have completed the work but have not been paid, that money is still owed to your business.

Outstanding invoices represent cash that has not yet made it into your bank account. Mid-year is a great time to follow up on unpaid invoices before the busy summer season continues.

Think About the Second Half of the Year

What does July through December look like for your business?

Will you experience seasonal slowdowns? Are you planning to hire, invest in new equipment, or prepare for a busy year-end?

Even a simple forecast of the next six months can help you make proactive decisions instead of reactive ones.

You Do Not Need It to Be Perfect

A mid-year financial review is not about having every answer. It is about paying attention.

The more consistently you review your numbers, the less overwhelming they become.
